Dear Families,

Thank you for your interest in Leadership Commonwealth School! A Commonwealth School is a once a week 'school' for home schooling families, similar to a co-op. Our School is a natural extension of the family. We unite behind the following Proclamation:

We proclaim that as educators and parents, our mission is to raise joyful leaders who love learning, passionately pursue their God-given missions in life, and impact the human family for good. We support the family as the fundamental unit of society and believe it to be ordained of God. We encourage parents and youth to strive for family unity. We govern ourselves according to the principles of Leadership Education. We are working toward getting an education like the ones our Founding Fathers received, one that matches our missions in life, and develops solid character and an allegiance to God. We will inspire students (both parents and children) to love learning, deeply study the classics, and govern themselves according to natural law. Students will learn how to think for themselves and initiate solutions based on the principles of freedom and self-control.

We come together as families to support one another in the pursuit of building strong and moral families and developing citizens who are capable of governing themselves. We support the families involved in the pursuit of the God-centered, family-driven, freedom-based education called Leadership Education. We believe in natural phases of development and in learning basics such as right from wrong, true from false, and good from evil. We believe in inviting our children to fall in love with learning. We want to inspire our children to become life-long learners through great parenting, inspired mentoring, and by example. A natural extension of becoming life-long learners is developing the skills, abilities and habits of scholars, diving into learning until we have a breadth and depth that helps us reach excellence in a variety of areas so that we may contribute in unique ways to building a society rich in morality, beauty, virtue, and all that is praiseworthy.

We believe that each member of the family has a variety of personal missions that they are called to perform throughout their life, and it is our duty and privilege as parents to help prepare our families to be able to meet these calls when they come. The purpose of education is to develop within ourselves and within our children the Vision, Mission, Abilities, Skills, and Knowledge that bring us closer to fulfilling our God-given missions. When we focus on the educational needs of the families in our School, it is natural that we take responsibility for our own growth: both spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically. Our goal is to seek and apply truth as individuals and as families.

We are gathering families who support this proclamation and agree with the Liber Community Creed, which states:

1. Families are the basic/fundamental unit of society and ordained of God. (Bible)

2. Governments are institutions of men and derive their power from the people governed. (Declaration of Independence)

3. The results of our actions are determined by obedience (or disobedience) to natural law. (Bastiat)

4. We have God-given freedom of choice (Galatians 5:1); no conscience should be forced. (U.S. Constitution)

At Leadership Commonwealth School, everyone joyfully shares in mentoring and contributes to the best of their ability. We do not require students to complete assignments, but offer inspiring opportunities for them to do so as they freely choose. Classes for Juniors (ages 0-11) vary based on needs and include some Charlotte Mason Style methods. We open our Junior school days with a group Prayer, Pledge of Allegiance and Patriotic Song. We help children enjoy the Classics through read-alouds and activities, teach them the principles of self-government and freedom, and inspire them to learn more at home by finding answers to their own questions. The school is supplemental to what you are doing in your home school already, with several activities which are able to replace portions of your home school curriculum as families may choose. Children do have the opportunity to do weekly presentations as they choose.

We mentor scholars (age 12+) in the principles of Leadership Education and how to apply them in their own lives. This set of principles is outlined in the book A Thomas Jefferson Education by Oliver DeMille. We open our day with group Prayer and Devotional. In the Fall of 2018, we are offering the Key of Liberty (study of our country's founding, Declaration of Independence, Revolutionary War and the Constitution) and Shakespeare Scholar Projects, as offered by Leadership Education Mentoring Institute (LEMI). These projects do have the potential to count for several high school credits. Students may spend 10-15 hours per week at home for these classes. We are also offering Hero Project (a focus on WWII Heroes) in the Fall, and Quest I in the Spring for those who are ready for more of a challenge. All our mentors are LEMI trained and help to customize the assignments and content to the needs of the student when necessary. We will continue the transformational LEMI Family Foundations Class for parents, taught by a LEMI Trained Mentor. To get the most out of that class, families are encouraged to participate in the brief but powerful online lessons that go with this class, found at libercommunities.com, for a minimal monthly fee, Sep-May. This is optional, but highly recommended.

Behavior Standards

We desire to create a positive, safe environment with a close knit "tribal" community of happy, trusted, compassionate, forgiving friends. Please respect yourself, environment, mentors, and peers in dress, speech and action. Behavior at all times is expected to be morally appropriate, including clean language and modesty. Clean language includes not taking God’s name in vain. Modest dress includes not wearing clothing that reveals too much skin, or with vulgar language or violent or immodest images. Students and parents should avoid clothing that is tight, sheer, or revealing, short shorts and short skirts, shirts that do not cover the stomach, and clothing that does not cover the shoulders or is low-cut in the front or the back. Modest behavior includes not commenting inappropriately about bodies, immoral or vulgar subjects, one’s personal sexual orientation, or acting in any way that would cause someone to feel uncomfortable. This includes inappropriate flirtatious behavior.

Students and parents will not engage in games or behavior that damages relationships, creates anxiety, or is harmful to others in any way, whether emotionally, spiritually, or physically. If parents have a concern, they are asked to please openly communicate their concern and present what they feel is or would have been a solution to the issue. LCS is an uplifting environment for learning, and is not the place for romantic relationships, dating, or public displays of affection. Students will please not have cell phones or any electronic devices out at Commonwealth at any time unless communication with a parent is needed or a specific purpose for class makes it necessary. This includes during lunch and free play time at the end of the day. Youth may not use the device until in a vehicle on the way home. Please leave your environment better than you found it.  Please do not bring pets to school.

There will be no drop offs, please. If a family member is sick, all stay home. All children are required to have a parent or specified guardian on campus at all times. In extenuating circumstances, children age 12 and up may *occasionally* come to Scholar Project Classes without a mom if she arranges for another guardian to be responsible for her teens and approval is received from the Executive Board. The Executive Board reserves the right to approve or deny requests for a Leave of Absence in extenuating circumstances for established members.

All moms/guardians are present at all times and have an assignment. Parents should be as involved as possible during each class, interacting with students and Lead Mentors, and staying connected. There will be at least two adults with each group of children at all times. Children may not leave their area without adult supervision. All parents must review the BSA Youth Protection Training Article on safety as well as Articles on our Teaching Methods and School Culture. In addition, all parent mentors must participate in our Parent Mentor Training before the first day of class. If you cannot make it to this Parent Meeting, you will need to speak personally with a member of the Executive Board to receive the training.

Each adult and student will show respect to all other adults and students at all times, whether in or out of class in regards to the things they say and do, with special emphasis on respect to one another’s religious and political views and tolerance of differences, especially during class discussions. As granted in the Constitution of the United States of America, we reserve the right to share our religious and political beliefs openly and freely in all of our discussions. Each may call upon their personal scriptures or creeds in presenting their thoughts. Mentors will present their lectures in a way which encourages open discussion of all views, allowing all class members to feel included and all opinions honored.

Violations of the above standards will be immediately addressed. Repeated violations will result in student suspension for one week. After the third suspension, further repeated violation will result in expulsion for the remainder of the semester.
